for all the family - studies have shown that parents who form groups with other parents of children with cancer find their own ability to cope is strengthened by sharing experiences. LEUCAN arranges coffee mornings and parents evenings.
LEUCAN aim to give each newly diagnosed family an information pack with practical advice and tips on how to survive in the hospital environment.
to aid treatment at home. LEUCAN has also purchased items for the children’s wards at Worthing Hospital to make visits to hospital more comfortable.
to families who have unexpected expenses and travel costs as a result of their child’s illness. Every family receives an initial donation after diagnosis. Older children are offered a laptop to continue their access to education and friends. Younger children are offered a DVD player to help with the long car journeys and hospital visits.
Katie was diagnosed with leukaemia in 2001 aged 4 and endured 2½ years of gruelling chemotherapy.
Sadly 18 months later the leukaemia returned and Katie once again endured another 2½ years of chemotherapy.
During her treatment Katie:-
During this time, LEUCAN supported us as a family by providing Katie with art and craft materials to help pass the time in hospital. LEUCAN also provided opportunities to spend time together as a family during activity weekends and acted as a shoulder to cry on during those bleak times.
Katie is now 12, at secondary school and ‘getting on with her life’. The hospital visits will never go away, and we don’t know what the future will hold, however we live life to the full and seize every opportunity as it presents itself.
We remain fully involved in LEUCAN and hope that other families can benefit from our many experiences.
